It is a small square surrounded by the Church and Convent of the Franciscans. At its center is the Monument to Captain Alonso de Mercadillo, founder of the city of Loja, and to the south-eastern corner of the square is the Casa de la Cultura.
In its central part the monument stands in honor of the benefactor of the school that bears his name, Bernardo Valdivieso. They surround the Cathedral, the building of the Provincial Council, the Episcopal House, the Municipal Palace, the House of the Government and the Central Bank Museum.
It is one of the largest churches of Ecuador, is located in the city center across from Central Park. It is an eclectic style, with historicist, neoclassical and Corinthian elements. It has been restored three times, the last in 2004.
